Default Heater Core Valve Swap

ok... So one thing that bothered me with my LS1 swap is that my S14 has an external valve going to the heater core. It's got this ugly-ass cable coming out of the fire wall and going to a little valve on one of the heater hoses in the enigne bay... no only is it unsightly but it makes this more difficult when dealing with clearances and what not.

here's an old pic... the valve is on the left the cables comes out of the firewall on the right

Come to find out it's ONLY the 1995s that are like this... all S13s use an internal valve, and 96-98s all have an internal valve as well

Thanks Nissan!

So I'd like to know what the internal valve looks like. I'm wondering if I can swap out the valve from a 96-98 and make it internal to give me some more room and clean up the bay a little.

Also how hard is it get at the heater core? I already have the blower and evaporator removed... will I have to remove the whole friggin dash to get at it? I would hoping I could avoid that if I could...

any pictures/advice/etc would be appreciated.

Interesting courtesy parts doesn't show any difference between the 95 and the 96+
http://www.courtesyparts.com/240sx-p...3727_3744.html

what IS interesting though is that for the external valve they DO show that the 96 plus just uses a straight through connector instead of the valve...

thats crazy how the set up is almost identical on the s13 chassis. so what are you going to do mr twisted? run the 96+ lines and valve? or are you going to tinker with the 95 line/valve??? would be neat to see pictures of it regardless of what you do.

well I'll need to do something because word on the Silvia V8 forums is that the valve hits the rear coil pack

tonight I'm going to take a look and see if I can swap out the water neck without removing the heater core...

---------
according the courtesy parts the 95 and 96+ use the same water neck... which is baffling, though when you look at the whole heater core assembly it lists them as being different.

the only part I can see that has a different PN for the 95s and 96+ is this:
27750-S14001 - 02/1994-05/1995 F/AIR MIX ACTUATOR Bracket
27750-S14002 - 05/1995+ F/AIR MIX ACTUATOR Bracket

^that's just a $4 bracket ... like I said the actual necks are the same PN.. I checked all the other parts listed in the assmelby and they all turned up with using the same part for all years of the S14...

looking at some pictures on ebay for 96+ heater cores I DONT SEE the little arm from your picture either...

this makes me wonder if nissan just nixed the valve altogether... at the same time though the Cable that controls it shows up as being a part for the 95-98

I might take a closer look at the factory service manual tonight to see if that provides any clues.

nissan used a jacketed cable right?

couldn't you put a straight coupler where your valve is, and move your valve into a new slice just south of the firewall?

yeah, you'd have to reroute cable, but it leaves no question as to whether or not you were supposed to have a valve, and it should cost like $6
